I think it’s fair to say that superhero movies can be their own genre now. We’ve had a slew of them in the last couple decades, heavily ushered in by X-Men and Spider-Man around the turn of the century. And easily the biggest continuous series out of all of them these days has to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was officially kicked off by Iron Man.
Jon Favreau pushed incredibly hard for Robert Downey Jr. to be our Tony Stark, and after all this time it’s hard to envision anyone else in the role. RDJ perfectly encapsulates Tony’s genius and sarcasm, his charisma and his pride, his talent and his temper. His arc throughout the MCU ended last year and it really had me in tears. And not many films manage to do that.

I love this movie so much, not just because of its significance in starting one of the biggest movie franchises ever, but because it’s a film that leaves you wanting more, all the way up through the bold declaration right before the credits:
“I am Iron Man.”
