If we’re counting superhero movies as a genre, then I’m definitely going to go with this one. It had some big shoes to fill, coming after Days of Future Past (a movie that had a unique take on time travel and executed it phenomenally), and in many places this just failed to live up to expectations.

Apocalypse is supposed to be the first ever mutant, and the most powerful, but his powers don’t really get defined throughout the movie. When you think of any particular X-Men mutant, it’s usually pretty easy to see what they can do. Storm? Can control the weather. Cyclops? Laser beams from his eyes. Magneto? He can manipulate metal. But Apocalypse? Well… I remember that he can turn people into sand or something. We also get a new version of Jean Grey, who somehow manages to (spoilers) let her Phoenix powers loose and shatter Apocalypse’s grip on everyone else, then everyone gangs up and disintegrates him or something. And for someone who’s usually supposed to be a core member of the X-Men, we see relatively little of what she can do as well. “But that’s what the next movie was for!” some might say. Well, that one has been so horribly panned that I have almost no desire to see it.
At least this one had another cool slow-mo scene with Quicksilver… which was still done better in Days of Future Past.
