19. Film made by a favorite director – The Prestige

Christopher Nolan’s works will make it on this list a few times, having already done so once with The Dark Knight and doing so again in just a couple posts from now. Nolan’s love of film and the moviegoing experience is evident especially as of late, with some of his latest films like Dunkirk, Interstellar, and the recently released Tenet using scenes, stories, and set pieces meant for large screens. (That last one has officially been released, but seeing as how it’s still a bit iffy to safely be able to go to the movies, it will probably be a while before I go watch it.)

I didn’t see The Prestige when it first came out, however. It took me a few years to watch it, but when I did for the first time it blew me away. It details the story of two competing magicians, played by Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, and how fiercely they struggle to be the best in the business. With elements of suspense, misdirection, and even a touch of sci-fi, the movie will leave you wanting to start over and watch it again as it asks, like any practiced magician: “Are you watching closely?”
