20. Favorite documentary – Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind

I saw this shortly after it came out and have yet to rewatch it since then, but I remember loving it as there was hardly anything I’d seen him in that I didn’t like. I still need to work my way through his total works – I recently saw Good Morning Vietnam for the first time and thought it was intense, but good – but even from just what I’ve seen I have nothing but fond memories.

The documentary is so wonderfully insightful because it pulls together a lot of people who were important during his whole life, not just for his public career but throughout his personal triumphs and struggles as well. When we see various celebrities – actors, musicians, etc. – we may not always see those struggles that they go through. They may put on a happy face for the rest of the world but inside they’re hurting in more ways than one. The same goes for our own friends and family, and since they’re likely more reachable than someone like Williams was in our own lives, I feel like it’s important to reach out and support when we can.
From the last time I’d made a blog, I actually wrote about Williams’ passing about a day after the fact. Here’s a bit from the end of that post:

“So in the event that a loved one of ours passes away, due to death by natural causes, an accident, a suicide, or whatever the situation may be, what should we do? Obviously there is a needed time to mourn about it, but my thoughts are to not completely focus on the loss. Rather, let’s focus on what was left behind, and the good times we had. I’m reminded of when I lost a good friend of mine [some years ago] from a hiking accident; I wasn’t able to attend his funeral in Colorado, but before that had taken place there was a remembrance service where people simply came and talked about the happy/funny memories they had of him. With someone as iconic as Robin Williams, while his personal life might not have been the image of perfection, can we do the same? Can we remember those good times, and the good things he left with us?”
