6. Favorite animated film – Shrek 2

This was a fairly hard decision to make as there are so, so many fantastic animated films to choose from. And there’s one that came out just a couple years ago that would have been a contender, were it not for the fact that it occupies a spot near the end of this list. Not gonna spoil which one that is though, don’t worry!

The reason for my choice is because the Shrek movies were a breath of fresh air when it comes to animated fairy tales. The first one flipped the script on what a fairy tale hero is supposed to be like, and has plenty of its own memorable moments. But this second one stands out a bit more to me, not only with the slob-turned-hero Shrek but also the antagonist being none other than Fairy Godmother, who in pretty much any fairy tale before had always been seen as a loving aide to the main character. And that song for the finale! Jennifer Saunders doing that upbeat cover “Holding Out For A Hero” and its accompanying scenes of storming the castle feels like a perfect theme to bring it all to a climax.
Fun fact, the original actor being considered for Shrek was actually Chris Farley, had he not passed away when he did. Would have been interesting to see what direction the series would have gone if he was still around, if it would have changed at all.
