25. Film not set in the current era – Newsies

Those who know me well may be surprised to see a musical so late on this list. (Peter Pan and Muppet Treasure Island may be considered musicals, but I’d classify them as children’s movies first.) I really enjoy for musicals, in part because I’ve participated in them since 6th grade (Music Man, for the record) and seen many over the years from Peter Pan, Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, and most recently the excellent Hamilton.

Incidentally, Newsies came to mind for this prompt not because it’s a musical, but because of how iconic its setting is. New York City around the early 20th century allowed for some fun characters and choreography, with an upbeat soundtrack to boot. And it featured a young Christian Bale! And Bill Pullman! And… not a whole lot of other big names. Yeah, this wasn’t exactly the movie to launch many young actors’ careers, but it’s still a fun watch. And if you want a slightly different version of it, the stage production is pretty good too! Though I think I still have a soft spot for the movie as it came first.

  1. Well, for me, I am more into the stage show. The stage show was how I first saw Newsies.

I love musicals- other Disney musicals I love are Aladdin Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, and Lion King.
